Champions League 2020: Final Review

Paris Saint-Germain lost the Champions League Final to Bayern Munich. Their ascension to the final match was still impressive. This was their first final, as opposed to Bayern’s 11th. Bayern was a clear favorite and their victory, while sound, did not come easily. While the final was not as action-packed as some other matches in the competition, it was still thrilling. In the end, it was more a matter of experience of playing at this level of competition.

First Half

Manuel Neuer was an immovable wall before the attacks of Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. The player with the most expensive contract did not manage to win the title for PSG. The Parisiens also did not receive any goals in the first half. Robert Lewandowski was not as precise as he may have hoped. He hit the post by mistake in the 22nd minute. Navas made a save ten minutes later.

Coman’s Time to Shine

Lewandowski’s spotlight quickly shifted in the second half to Kingsley Coman, who scored the only goal of the match in the 59th minute. With this, Coman has scored a goal for almost every ten games. It was interesting to see a player that spent nine years playing for PSG being the one who eliminated them from the final.

Coman’s goal was a breath of fresh air in the second half. The first 11 minutes of it focused on three yellow cards: two for Bayern and one for PSG. Lewandowski kept attacking fiercely but faced aggressive defense from PSG every time. Had he managed to score two goals, he would have managed Ronaldo’s record.

Bottom Line

Paris Saint-Germain had talented and trained players, without a shadow of a doubt. However, they have not been at this level of play as long as Bayern and it shows. Unfortunately for PSG, this is also the first time since 2016 that they did not score in a major European competition.
