Europa League 2020: Day 2 Quarterfinals Match Reviews

After the second day of quarterfinals 2020 Europa League matches, all semifinalists are known. Both Shakhtar and Seville made it through and continue the tournament with high hopes of going all the way.

The Ukrainian champion dispatched Basel with ease after a 4-1 victory. It was a magnificent display of football composed in the South American rhythm thanks to the Brazilian colony currently residing in Shakhtar Donetsk.

Junior Moraes opened up the scoreline once again after a Marlos assist in the 2nd minute of the game. Only 20 minutes later, Taison made it two after a deflection. No goals were seen until the closing part of the game. Alan Patrick scored from the penalty spot while Dodo raced for a quick goal of a counter-attack in the 88th minute of the game. The only thing Basel could do was to score a consolidation goal in the closing minutes of the game, courtesy of Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

This is going to be Shakhtar’s third Europa League semifinals as they last time they made it though was in 2016.

Wolverhampton saw their hopes of reaching the Europe League finale disappear after being eliminated by Seville by 1-0.

It was a very interesting game where we didn’t see a lot of opportunities nor goals. Both teams had almost equal possession of the ball. But Seville provides in the end, with heavy pressure, why they are the Europa League specialists.

Wolves had a big chance to take the lead after Adama Traore completed an 80-yard run before being brought down in the penalty box. Raul Jimenez stepped up and actually missed the penalty, something he wasn’t able to do in the last 18 tries.

This seemed to turn the tide in favor of Seville. Even though they had better chances they only managed to convert in the 88th minute of the game when Lucas Ocampos turned Ever Banega’s cross with a powerful header into the winning goal.

With this win, Seville keeps their hopes alive for their sixth Europa League trophy.
