Tottenham 1-1 ChelseaPavlyuchenko 15 Drogba 70
Chelsea were denied three rare EPL points when Didier Drogba’s stoppage-time penalty was dramatically saved by Tottenham keeper Heurelho Gomes.
The two swapped hero and villain status after Gomes had allowed Drogba’s 70th minute strike through his hands for Chelsea’s second-half equaliser.
Tottenham went ahead on 15 minutes. Jermaine Defoe, looking suspiciously offside, broke free down the left and crossed for Roman Pavlyuchenko, who had space to turn and shoot low left-footed past Chelsea keeper Petr Cech.
Chelsea had the better of the first-half chances, with Salomon Kalou missing three decent opportunities before Spurs threatened again, Defoe firing narrowly wide from 20 yards shortly after the interval.
Half-time substitute Drogba, forced Gomes into a fine low save on 55 minutes. And Gomes was more acrobatic moments later, tipping over Wilson Palacios’s mistimed defensive header.
With 20 minutes left, Chelsea levelled when the ball struck Drogba’s arm accidentally, allowing him to shake off the attentions of his marker Michael Dawson before firing left-footed at, and through, Gomes.
Chelsea looked the likelier winners, especially when Gomes clattered Ramires in the area in stoppage time. But the Brazilian custodian redeemed himself for his day’s misdemeanours by diving to his left to parry Drogba’s spot-kick. Tags: Chelsea, Didier Drogba, Tottenham, Roman Pavlyuchenko Posted: |
