Lyon won the first leg of last season’s clash at Stade Gerland thanks to Michel Bastos’ goal. Real took the lead in the reverse fixture at the Bernabeu through Cristiano Ronaldo but a goal from Bosnian wonder kid Miralem Pjanic allowed OL to progress 2-1 on aggregate at the expense of Real.

Real Madrid have a poor European record at Stade Gerland. In the 2005/06 season, they were humbled 3-0, while the next season did not bring about any change either as Los Blancos went down 2-0.

Lyon started the group stages with three wins in as many games, but were only able to pick up a solitary point from their remaining group fixtures. Nevertheless they did enough to qualify second in Group B behind Schalke. Real Madrid won five and drew one in Group G to finish with sixteen points from their group engagements.
