Big-spending Manchester City fell to their second EPL defeat in six days after failing to maintain their lightning start against a Wolves side who hadn’t won since the season’s opening day.

They led through Emanuel Adebayor’s 23rd-minute penalty, the Togolese striker’s first EPL goal of the season, having created a number of good chances before then.

EPL debutant Mario Balotelli came closest in those early exchanges, firing wide after running onto a James Milner cross from the right.

City took the lead when David Silva was clumsily upended in the penalty area by Richard Stearman and Adebayor sent Wolves keeper Marcus Hahnemann the wrong way from the spot.

But Wolves were level within seven minutes. A deflected right-wing cross from the increasingly dangerous Matt Jarvis fell to Nenad Milijas on the edge of the box and he placed a firm left-foot shot past City keeper Joe Hart’s left hand.

Adebayor headed inches wide from another Balotelli cross. But after the break, the initiative was with Wolves.

And they went ahead when David Edwards coolly finished after Kevin Doyle’s shot deflected into his path.

Adebayor had one last chance for City, but blazed over Adam Johnson’s right-wing cross from 15 yards.
