Wigan Athletic 1-0 MiddlesbroughWigan Athletic registered its first win of the new season with a convincing 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough at the JJB Stadium on Wednesday. A second goal in as many games by Antoine Sibierski was enough as Wigan held on to their first victory under Chris Hutchings. Wigan made a single change to the line up that lost against Everton on Saturday, with Sibierski replacing Caleb Folan while Middlesbrough made no changes to the starting line up that lost against Blackburn. Wigan had the first chance of the match when Antonio Valencia teed up Sibierski on the edge of the area only for the 33-year old to sky his attempt over the bar. With Middlesbrough unable to create any kind of chances, Wigan looked the more likely team to score first and Denny Landzaat cam close to doing so in the 20th minute when his attempted chip shot over Mark Schwarzer went just wide of the post. Middlesbrough first chance of the match came in 29th minute when Jeremie Aliadiere's clever back-pass was latched on by Stewart Downing whose stinging shot on target was blocked bravely by Mario Melchiot. Second half saw Middlesbrough pegged back as Wigan dominated the possession. Chris Hutchings' men finally got the goal that they were looking for in the 54th minute when Schwarzer could only parry Valencia's stinging drive from 25-yards out and Sibierski happily pounced on the rebound to give Wigan the lead. Middlesbrough were unable to recover from the goal, but came close to equalizing in the 61st minute when Downing's shot smashed against the bottom of the post. Wigan could have doubled the lead in the injury time, but Paul Scharner's shot went well wide off the target. Middlesbrough continue to search for the first points of the new season when they meet Fulham on Saturday while Wigan play newly promoted Sunderland on August 18.
