Wigan Athletic 0-2 PortsmouthPortsmouth scored two goals in last 10 minutes against Wigan Athletic to maintain their good start to the season with a fourth consecutive victory in the Premiership.
Benjani Mwaruwari gave Portsmouth the lead nine minutes before full time and Glen Johnson added the second five minutes later to put the result beyond Wigan's reach in a match that had promised to provide little excitement before the late brace.
Wigan started the match strongly with the hosts coming close to opening the scoring in the early minutes of the match when Paul Scharner headed straight into the goal post after doing well to reach Andreas Granqvist's flick on from a Michael Brown free kick.
It was one of the very few chances in the first half as both the teams struggled to create any clear chances and were limited to long range efforts. Portsmouth started to take control of the match in the second half as Niko Kranjcar and Sol Campbell both came close to breaking the deadlock.
The Wigan defense finally crumbled in face of incessant pressure in the 81st minute when Benjani latched on to Sulley Muntari's cross to tap home the ball from close range. Five minutes later, it was match over for Wigan as Johnson pushed forward from the defense before smashing home a low shot past Chris Kirkland to double the lead.
Wigan failed to create any late chances, leaving Portsmouth with a fourth win in as many games as Pompey maintained their fifth place in the league table. Tags: Portsmouth, Wigan Athletic, Sol Campbell Posted: |
