Wigan Athletic 0-2 Chelsea

Chelsea maintained their winning streak with a convincing 2-0 win over a poor Wigan Athletic side in their Premiership clash on Saturday.

Frank Lampard scored the opening goal from close range before Juliano Belletti smashed home a brilliant goal from outside the area after creating space for himself with a great run. Wigan were completely outclassed by their superior opponents and the defeat pushes the side into the relegation zone with 12 games into the season.

Wigan started the game strongly and were the first to create a chance when Jason Koumas saw his close range shot smash into the side netting. Petr Cech was pressed into action few minutes later to deny Denny Landzaat. However it was Chelsea who scored the first goal of the match with a great team move.

Shaun Wright-Phillips went on a great run on the right wing, stepping past challenges from Landzaat and Kevin Kilbane before crossing the ball into the path of Lampard's run who made no mistake in putting Chelsea in the lead. Belletti doubled the lead six minutes later with a great run from inside Chelsea's half as Wigan defenders failed to intercept the full back who had enough time to steady himself before smashing the ball past Chris Kirkland and into the net to score his first goal for Chelsea.

With Wigan failing to chalk up any response, it was Chelsea all the way as Avram Grant's side looked more likely of the two teams to score a goal. Wright-Phillips was looking impressive and the winger went on a run of his own but was let down by his shooting after he drove the ball straight into the waiting arms of Kirkland.

Wigan had one late chance to get a consolation goal through Michael Brown but Alex put in a great block to deflect the ball away from the target as Chelsea shut up shop for the last few minutes to grab another league win.
