Wigan Athletic 2-1 Manchester City

On loan striker Amr Zaki scored his fifth league goal for Wigan Athletic as they beat Manchester City 2-1 in their Premier League clash on Sunday.

Wigan had taken an early lead through Antonio Valencia in the 16th minute but Manchester City struck back to equalize six minutes later through Vincent Kompany. The hosts though went into the second half in the lead after Javier Garrido seemed to have fouled Wilson Palacios in the area and Zaki made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Fresh from their humiliation in the Carling Cup, Manchester City were off the blocks right from the kick off but it was Wigan who had the first real chance to score. Zaki latched on to the ball near the City penalty area and curled the ball just wide of the far post.

The hosts took the lead in the 16th minute when Valencia latched on to a deflected free kick, beat Micah Richards before slotting the ball past Joe Hart and into the net. Robinho had a great chance to equalize for City a minute later but though the Brazilian striker managed to beat the defender, his tame shot flew harmlessly wide of the target.

However it was not long before the visitors were back on level terms as Palacios failed to clear Elano's free kick, leaving Kompany with a simple tap in to restore parity. Three minutes past the half hour mark, Wigan were awarded a contentious penalty by referee Steve Bennett which left Mark Hughes fuming on the sidelines.

Garrido closed in on Palacios inside the penalty area and though there was contact between the two players, Palacios' theatrical fall worsened the situation for City with Zaki calmly converting from the spot. The visitors stepped up the pressure in the second half with Elano, Wright-Phillips and Ireland all going close to scoring an equalizer but Wigan held on to claim all three points from the tie.
