Wigan Athletic 0-5 Manchester United

Manchester United's response to a shock 1-0 loss to Burnley during their midweek premiership fixture was a 0-5 romp at the DW Stadium, which left Wigan fans stunned and United fans euphoric.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson had affected seven changes to the side which lost at Turf Moor and his charges showed fine character as they struck at regular intervals in the second half. The first 45 minutes were a tense affair with both teams refusing to be drawn out of their defensive shells.

Darren Fletcher almost gave United the lead in the 4th minute, but Titus Bramble cleared off the line to save the day for Wigan. Wayne Rooney unleashed a fine shot on 16 minutes, but it flew just wide. Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was on hand to save Rooney's close range shot three minutes later. In the 26th minute, Wigan almost took the lead, but Ben Foster was alert enough to smother Jason Koumas' drive.

After the break, Charles N'Zogbia almost gave Wigan the lead when his free-kick picked out Paul Schraner. The latter's header narrowly missed the mark. Wayne Rooney finally broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when he headed home Antonio Valencia's cross. Berbatov made it 2-0 in the 58th minute tapping in from a Paul Scholes pass. In the 65th minute, it was 3-0 when Rooney's shot took a slight deflection off Mario Melchiot and landed into the net.

Owen, who came on for Rooney in the 72nd minute, made it 4-0 to United and Nani scored off a free-kick in the last minute to seal a wonderful outing for Manchester United.
