Wigan Athletic 0-2 Manchester UnitedManchester United emerged champions of England for the second successive season as they completed a comfortable 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic on Sunday to stay ahead of Chelsea on the final day of the season.
After a nervy start, United took the lead through Cristiano Ronaldo who scored his 41st goal of the season from the penalty spot just past the half hour mark. The visitors were unable to breach a stubborn Wigan defense that kept their side in the game but Ryan Giggs marked his 758th game for United by doubling the lead 10 minutes from time and sealing his side's 17th league title win.
United knew that a victory against Wigan would see them successfully defend their league title and the visitors started the game in an attacking fashion. However they were unable to create clear chances early in the game as Wigan dug deep to ward off United attacks.
United's best chance in the opening minutes of the first half fell to Paul Scholes who dragged his shot wide off the target from 20 yards out. The visitors received a lucky break in the 32nd minute when Rooney was fouled inside the penalty area by Emmerson Boyce and Ronaldo coolly converted from the spot.
United stepped up the pressure in the second half with Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez all going close to doubling the lead but Wigan defense held on to keep their side in the game. Ryan Giggs equaled Sir Bobby Charlton's record of most number of appearances for United when he replaced Ji-Sung Park in the 68th minute.
With just 10 minutes remaining, Giggs made sure that he will be picking up a 10th Premier League winners medal by slotting home from inside the penalty area and sending the away fans into wild celebrations. Tags: Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wigan, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs Posted: |
