Wigan Athletic 0-1 ChelseaChelsea notched up their second straight victory in the Premier League with a hard fought win over Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium on Sunday.
Deco scored the only goal of the match with a brilliant curling free kick early in the 4th minute but Wigan manager Steve Bruce will be disappointed with the end result after his side put up a strong performance for the remainder of the game.
Chelsea went into the match looking for another easy victory following their 4-0 demolition of Portsmouth on the opening weekend of the season. The Blues looked on course for another high scoring victory when they took a 4th minute lead through Deco who curled in a brilliant free kick after Lee Cattermole handled the ball just outside the area.
However Wigan stepped up a gear following the goal as Chelsea struggled to create any real chances, with the midfield unusually quiet. A moment of brilliance saw Wilson Palacios dribble his way past the Chelsea defense but his shot was saved in style by Petr Cech.
Cech was on hand to pull of another good save after Amr Zaki was put through by Jason Koumas but the Egyptian striker failed to beat the Czech goalkeeper. Chelsea were struggling to contain Wigan as Zaki saw another shot saved low by Cech. The hosts struggled to maintain the pressure in the second half as Chelsea hung on to claim all three points from the clash. Tags: Chelsea, Premier League, Deco, Wigan, Amr Zaki Posted: |
