Wigan 3-2 Arsenal Watson 80 Walcott 41
Bramble 88 Silvestre 48 N’Zogbia 90 + 1 Arsenal’s realistic EPL title hopes were crushed by a dramatic ten-minute collapse at relegation-strugglers Wigan, the Latics first-ever win over the Gunners. They were two-nil up after eighty minutes in which they had looked comfortable. But when Ben Watson side-footed home substitute Victor Moses’ cross, it sparked a remarkable comeback. The Latics poured forward and were gifted an 88th minute equaliser when keeper Lukasz Fabianski dropped a corner virtually onto the head of centre-half Titus Bramble, who couldn’t miss. And right on full-time, Charles N’Zogbia took full advantage of some disorganised Arsenal defending to curl a magnificent left-foot winner in off the post from the edge of the area. The outcome could not have been foreseen, especially during the first hour. Theo Walcott spurned one fine opportunity to give Arsenal the lead on 33 minutes. But four minutes before the break, he was more clinical, converting Nicklas Bendtner’s pass despite the attentions of two defenders and keeper Chris Kirkland. Mikael Silvestre doubled Arsenal’s advantage with a free header on 48 minutes. Yet although Wigan gradually got more into the game as the half wore on, their late fireworks caught everyone unawares. And they consigned the Gunners to another trophyless season.
