Chelsea lost their 100% record in this season’s EPL, and dropped to second in the table, after being well beaten at Wigan’s DW Stadium.

Wigan hadn’t won in 34 previous meetings with the so-called “big four.” But Chelsea keeper Petr Cech was dismissed for a professional foul on the Latics’ Mexican striker Hugo Rodallega, early in the second half, with the score at 1-1.

And after Rodallega powered his penalty past replacement keeper Henrique Hilario, there was no way back for the Blues.

Chelsea were lacklustre throughout the match, especially their defence, which repeatedly lost concentration.

Wigan’s 16th minute opener came from just such a lapse in concentration. Charles N’Zogbia was allowed time and space to meet a short corner and measure his cross for an unmarked Titus Bramble to head home.

Chelsea were nearly caught out moments later by the same move, Emmerson Boyce’s shot eventually being well saved by Cech.

Jason Scotland also forced a save from Cech and was later denied by a last-ditch John Terry tackle.

But ninety seconds after the break, it looked like Chelsea would fashion a great escape when Didier Drogba’s shot squirmed through keeper Chris Kirkland’s legs after Florent Malouda had set up the chance.

It wasn’t a good few moments for keepers, however, as Cech tripped a clean-through Rodallega on 52 minutes and was sent-off for denying the Mexican a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Hugo Rodallega took that opportunity from the spot. And Wigan gave the scoreline a more emphatic look on 90 minutes, Paul Scharner sliding the ball over the line, with Chelsea a further man short after Ashley Cole’s injury.

Referring to their woeful record against the big-four, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez said: “It was something we had to change, for the fans. We want them to feel proud of Wigan.”
