West Ham United 0-2 EvertonEverton repeated their Carling Cup heroics in the midweek with another polished performance in their 2-0 victory over West Ham United on Saturday.
Ayegbeni Yakubu continued his recent excellent goalscoring form by putting Everton in the lead in the final minute of the first half. Andy Johnson came off the bench to put the result beyond doubt in the final minute of the match leaving West Ham manager Alan Curbishley ruing the missed chances that came his side's way.
Keen to avenge the Carling Cup defeat in the midweek, West Ham started the game in an attacking fashion with Nolberto Solano testing Tim Howard from an early corner. Solano was once again in the middle of hosts' next chance, finding Lucas Neill at the far post but the West Ham captain was unable to hit the back of the net.
The best chance of the half fell to Freddie Ljungberg midway through the first half when Solano, Mullins and Scott Parker combined well to find the midfielder in the penalty area but the Swedish international was only able to hit straight at Howard.
James Collins had a great chance to break the deadlock when the ball fell neatly on to his feet from a West Ham corner but the defender sliced his chance from just seven yards out. Everton made the hosts pay for the missed chances in the final minute of the half when Tim Cahill flicked on Mikel Arteta's cross and an unmarked Yakubu gleefully headed home past Robert Green to put his side in the lead.
West Ham pressed ahead in the second half but Everton showed more potency in the attack as Green great saves to deny Leon Osman and Yakubu.
With time running out, Robert Green came all the way up to the halfway line looking to cross the ball into the Everton penalty area but the visitors cleared the ball and Andy Johnson floated it over a retreating Green's head to put the result beyond West Ham's reach.
