West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Tottenham Brunt 41 Modric 27
Tottenham hung on for a point at the Hawthorns, in game they largely controlled until losing goalscorer Luka Modric through injury before half-time. New signing Rafael Van der Vaart was at the centre of most of Spurs good early work. His neat backheel set up Aaron Lennon for the game’s first chance only for the England winger to sky his left-foot shot.
And Spurs took a 27th minute lead when Van der Vaart’s right-wing cross was half-cleared to Modric, who drilled the ball home right-footed from 15 yards. The Baggies finished the half stronger. Debutant Paul Scharner fizzed a 25-yarder over Spurs keeper Carlo Cudicini’s crossbar before the hosts drew level on 41 minutes. Marc-Antoine Fortune’s left-foot shot was well-saved by Cudicini but Peter Odemwingie headed the loose ball to Chris Brunt at the far post, who bundled it home. Gareth Bale forced a fine save from Baggies keeper Scott Carson and Younes Kaboul fired a fierce long-range effort at the former England man. But West Brom dominated thereafter. Cudicini parried Jonas Olsson’s header and produced a stunning left-handed save from Odenwingie’s curling right-footed effort. Defender Gabriel Tamas could have won it late on but sliced his left-foot shot wide.
