A wonder strike from Luis Suarez saw La Celeste past a lively South Korea in Port Elizabeth, setting up their first quarter-final appearance since 1970.

Suarez also gave Uruguay the lead. They controlled much of the first half, but went defensive after the break and were made to pay.

And it took a moment of individual class from Suarez to see them through.

Sanchez opened the scoring when Diego Forlan’s cross evaded defenders and goalkeeper alike and he made no mistake with a side-footed finish into an empty net from the corner of the six-yard box.

Lee Chung-Yeung equalised when he reacted quickest to a poorly-cleared corner and headed past a hesitant defence from six yards.

But Suarez won the game when he picked up possession on the left corner of the penalty area, cut inside, and unleashed a curling, dipping right-foot shot which went in off the far post.
