USA 1-0 AlgeriaDonovan 90 + 2 The United States won World Cup Group C thanks to Landon Donovan’s stoppage-time goal, without which they would have been out of the competition. Both sides needed to win, which contributed to a hugely entertaining encounter. Algeria’s Rafik Djebbour struck the crossbar early on but USA soon began to dominate. Clint Dempsey had a goal erroneously disallowed for offside and Jozy Altidore missed an open goal from six yards before half-time. Les Fennecs keeper Raid M’Bohli made a string of saves and in the second half, Dempsey struck a post and missed the rebound. USA looked like they were running out of steam and ideas until the 92nd minute. Altidore broke down the right wing and crossed for Dempsey, whose shot was saved by M’Bohli, only for the loose ball to run free to Donovan, who drilled it home. Algerian captain Anther Yahia was mistakenly dismissed in the final seconds. Tags: United States, World Cup, Landon Donovan, Algeria, USA, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore Posted: |
