Turkey 3-0 HungaryTurkey revived their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008 championships in Austria and Switzerland next year as they beat Hungary 3-0 in their qualifying clash on Wednesday. The Turks overcame ten-man Hungary in fine fashion to take the third spot in Group C.
The game began at a fast pace with Gökdeniz Karadeniz and Tuncay Sanli having chances to put the home team ahead in the first half. However they were unable to get past a resolute Hungarian defense. On the opposite end Hakan Arıkan's goal was also threatened a couple of times, but Hungary were also unable to find the target.
In the first half it was Tamás Priskin who came close two times to breaking the deadlock for Hungary. However it was the sending off of Zoltán Gera on the 63rd minute that turned the match on its head.
Gera picked up a second yellow card in the 63rd minute and was off as Turkey pressed home their one-man advantage. An Emre pass found Gökdeniz on the 68th minute. The latter chipped to the far post where Gökhan rose unchallenged to put Turkey ahead in the 68th minute. Four minutes later the home team had doubled their advantage when Aurelio was on hand to put away a rebound off an Emre shot.
Turkey scored a third goal late in injury time through Halil Altıntop to seal a fine win. Turkey occupy the third spot in Group C with 17 points from eight games, the same as Norway, but with a game in hand. Hungary are on the fifth spot with nine points from as many games.
