Two late goals gave Liverpool a passage into the group stages of the Europa League after they fell behind early and withstood considerable first-half pressure.

The Reds were without both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. And they were missing them both within four minutes when Dirk Kuyt lost possession in midfield and Gustavo Colman’s left-foot cross-cum-shot was side-footed firmly past Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina by Teofilio Gutierrez.

Reina saved well low to his left and Ibrahim Yattara missed a close range free header midway through the half as the hosts continued to dominate.

But Liverpool gradually asserted some control as the night wore on, calming the boisterous home crowd, then silencing them with a strong finish.

They drew level on the night and grabbed the “all-important” away goal with seven minutes remaining.

Glen Johnson advanced down the right flank and his low near-post cross was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Remzi Kacar.

Five minutes later, Roy Hodgson’s men put the tie beyond doubt and ended Trabzonspor’s unbeaten home run in 2010.

Substitute Dani Pacheco’s left-foot shot was well parried by keeper Onur Kivrak but Kuyt was on-hand to fire home the close-range rebound with his right-foot.
