Tottenham Hotspur finally found its scoring boots as they thrashed Derby County 4-0 in their Premier League clash on Saturday.

Having got off to a bad start, Spurs boss Martin Jol needed the victory in order to keep his job and his players responded in style as Tottenham won its first match of the new season. Two goals in four minutes from Steed Malbranque and one each by Jermaine Jenas and Darren Bent completed the rout over Derby.

With Dimitar Berbatov out injured, Jol reverted back to 4-4-2 formation, bringing in Tom Huddlestone and Wayne Routledge in the midfield in place of Didier Zokora and Berbatov. Spurs took the lead in the 2nd minute when Jenas cleverly disguised his cross from the free kick and Malbranque smashed the ball into the net.

Four minutes later the French midfielder doubled his and Tottenham's tally when he latched on to Bent's cross before curling in the shot into the far post. The match was all but over by the 14th minute when Spurs got a goal, this time Jenas getting onto the goal scoring party.

Having snatched the ball from Andy Todd before embarking on a 40-yard dash that culminated with a great shot into the net. Wayne Routledge had a goal ruled out in the 30th minute while Jenas, Robbie Keane and Huddlestone were unable to hit the target.

Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson woke up from his slumber to save a header from Steve Howard, but it was looking unlikely that Derby would be able to get something from the match. Derby goalkeeper Stephen Bywater made a great save in the second half to deny Keane, but was unable to deny Spurs a fourth goal.

Pascal Chimbonda flicked the ball across the goal but Bywater only managed to push the ball on to the post, leaving Bent with a simplest of finishes from just inches wide of the goal line. Tottenham next face a tough away trip to Manchester United while Derby County play Birmingham City on Saturday. Watch live Premiership football on free-football.tv.
