Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Everton

Tottenham Hotspur's season took a turn for the worse when it was thrashed 3-1 by Everton at White Hart Lane on Tuesday. The second successive loss would have raised concerns among Tottenham fans and board, with a Champions League spot looking like a distant dream.

Everton raced to an early lead thanks to the 3rd minute goal by Joleon Lescott and though Tottenham were back on level terms through Anthony Gardner, goals from Leon Osman and Alan Stubbs made sure than the away side romped home to a comfortable victory.

Following the shock defeat to Sunderland in the first match, Tottenham boss Martin Jol started the match with an attacking line up comprising Robbie Keane, Darren Bent and Dimitar Berbatov. However Spurs' £40million strike force was left clueless in front of Everton's stubborn defense.

Everton took the lead in the 3rd minute when Mikel Arteta took a free kick from the right wing after being fouled by Paul Stalteri. The Spaniard curled in the ball and Lescott took full advantage of some poor marking by Gardner to thump home a header.

Stung by the early goal, Tottenham went all out for the equalizer, with Bent forcing a sharp save from Tim Howard before Joseph Yobo tackled bravely to block Berbatov from pouncing on the rebound. Everton had a chance of doubling the lead when Andy Johnson set up Victor Anichebe, but the 19-year old drove his shot straight into the hands of Paul Robinson.

Tottenham finally pulled level in the 26th minute when Gardner redeemed himself by heading home a Jermaine Jenas' corner. However Everton were back in front 10 minutes later when Arteta's chip cross was clear away by Ricardo Rocha. But the ball went straight to Leon Osman and the 26-year old made no mistaking in scoring his second goal of the season in as many matches.

Everton doubled the lead in the stoppage time of the first half when Alan Stubbs' free kick attempt took a deflection off Didier Zokora and into the goal, leaving Robinson wrong footed. Spurs came out attacking in the second half, with Keane and Defoe, on for Bent, both testing Howard. Tottenham's best chance of scoring a goal came in the early minutes of the second half when Berbatov's header crashed against the cross bar.

With two defeats in two matches, Tottenham's dream of Champions League qualification could remain a dream for one more season. Spurs next face Derby County on August 18 and a defeat against the Premiership newcomers could well mean end of the road for Martin Jol. Meanwhile Everton will look to maintain its 100 percent record when it faces Reading on Saturday.
