Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 SunderlandTottenham Hotspur suffered their second straight league defeat of the season as they were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland on Saturday.
After a quiet first half, Sunderland took the lead through Kieran Richardson in the 55th minute but a Jermaine Jenas goal saw Tottenham pull level in the 73rd minute. However new signing Djibril Cisse came off the bench to grab the winner eight minutes from full time.
After spending most of the first game on the bench, want away striker Dimitar Berbatov was dropped altogether from the squad with manager Juande Ramos stating that the players lacked focus to take part in the game.
Tottenham looked set to put behind their disappointment of an opening day defeat by dominating the possession right from the kick off but were struggling to create any real chances against a strong Sunderland defense.
The visitors were content to stay back and soak up the pressure as Tottenham failed to hit the target even once in the first half. Spurs almost took the lead soon after restart when Gareth Bale rose high to head a corner inches high of the cross bar.
Sunderland made them pay for the missed chance by taking the lead in the 55th minute when Richardson latched on a poor clearance by the Spurs defense to smash home from 25 yards out. Spurs stepped up a gear after the goal and equalized through Jenas in the 73rd minute who was quick to reach a rebound off Luka Modric's shot before tapping it past Gordon.
However it was the visitors who had the last say in the match when Djibril Cisse, who is on a year long loan from Marseille, headed home Daryl Murphy's cross from close range to clinch all three points for his side.
