Tottenham 3-1 Inter Milan
Van der Vaart 18 Eto’o 80
Tottenham staged a European “glory, glory night” to match any seen at White Hart Lane, overcoming Champions League holders Inter, thanks to another stellar Gareth Bale display.
Spurs now top Group A with a better record in head-to-head meetings with Inter, thanks almost entirely to mercurial Welshman Bale, who added to his hat-trick in Milan by creating Spurs’ two vital second-half goals, capping another sensational display.
In-form Rafael Van Der Vaart put Spurs ahead on 18 minutes, latching onto Luka Modric’s neat reverse pass and firing left-footed past Inter keeper Luca Castellazzi.
Bale created a superb chance moments later for Peter Crouch with a trademark surging left-sided run, only for Crouch to fire across a gaping goal.
However, Crouch didn’t pass up his next opportunity from a Bale bomb down the left-wing, sliding home the Welshman’s fabulous cross at the far post on 61 minutes.
Inter Milan’s Cameroon striker set up a grandstand finish with ten minutes remaining, cutting inside Spurs right-back Alan Hutton and unleashing an unstoppable right-foot drive from the edge of the box.
But Bale hit back in the 89th minute, creating another chance in the now-traditional manner which substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko rifled home right-footed from six yards.
