Wigan put their horrendous start to the season behind them with a shock win against a Spurs side suffering a Champions League hangover.

They lost this fixture 9-1 last season but this season they created the better chances throughout.

Steve Gohouri’s right-foot volley crashed against the crossbar before Spurs’ Jermaine Defoe brought the best out of Wigan keeper Ali Al-Habsi with a wonderful turn and low right-foot shot.

But three times in two remarkable late minutes, Hugo Rodallega was given the freedom of White Hart Lane.

His first cross from the right was inexplicably fired over an open goal from three yards by Antolin Alcaraz. His second provided a more difficult chance for Jordi Gomez, who couldn’t keep his shot down.

And Rodallega then fired a low right-foot shot from the right corner of the penalty area through the dive of Spurs keeper Carlo Cudicini.

Tottenham created more in the last ten minutes than in the first eighty. But Al-Habsi was equal to Nico Krancjar’s 25-yard effort and parried Michael Dawson’s shot from the resultant corner.

And Tom Huddlestone and Defoe were both off-target before Younes Kaboul beat Al-Habsi in the air, only to head wide of the gaping goal.
