Sunderland 1-1 FulhamSunderland managed to salvage one point from their Premiership clash with Fulham this Saturday thanks to a late header from Kenwyne Jones. The draw means the Black Cats stay above the relegation zone although they are far from feeling comfortable just yet.
There were worried frowns on the faces of 39,392 people assembled at Wearside when Fulham dominated the first 45 minutes of the game. Rarely did the Cottagers allow Sunderland to have possession and when they did they were quickly dispossessed.
Clint Dempsey was a force to reckon with in the first 45 minutes and he forced a save from Craig Gordon within 4 minutes and did the same again on 29 minutes. Fulham finally went ahead on 32 minutes when Diomansy Kamara was fouled. Simon Davies put them ahead from the resulting free-kick and it looked gloomy for Sunderland to say the least.
Whatever Roy Keane told his lads at the break seemed to be enough as they came out determined to break the shackles. Jones was particularly effective and in the first three minutes after the break managed to make a big impact. But there was still no goal for Sunderland. Fulham could have killed the game had Dempsey kept down his drive on 60 minutes.
Sunderland replaced Etuhu and Chopra with Stokes and Daryl Murphy, but this made little impact. Their situation got worse when Greg Halford was sent off for a second bookable offence. In the frantic final minutes, Jones headed in Leadbitter's cross to give the Black Cats breathing space.
Sunderland are 15th on the Premier League table with 9 points from 11 games, while Fulham are 14 with 9 points from 11 games.
