Sunderland 1-0 Tottenham HotspurAn injury time goal by debutant Michael Chopra gave Roy Keane a victory in his first match as a Premiership manager as Sunderland beat Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the campaign. Having won just three matches in the whole season that Sunderland last played in the Premiership, the victory will be cherished by the Black Cats supporters and gives the team a perfect platform to launch its bid to play in the competition next season. Both the teams have spent huge amounts of money in the summer for contrasting reasons, Sunderland to survive in the Premiership for the next season, while Tottenham looking to break into the top four positions come the end of the season. New signings Craig Gordon, Paul McShane, Dickson Etuhu and Kieran Richardson started the game for Sunderland while Michael Chopra was on the bench. Younes Kaboul was the only new face to start the match for Tottenham while Darren Bent was named on the bench, with Martin Jol sticking with Berbatov and Keane upfront. Tottenham had the first chance of the match when Jermaine Jenas saw his shot go wide in the 11th minute. However it was Sunderland who were looking the better of the two teams, creating chances up front. Keane had the first shot on target in the 25th minute which was gathered very easily by Gordon. Daryl Murphy should have had given lead for the home side with seven minutes from half time. Murphy latched on to a Wallace cross that evaded everyone, but was let down by his first touch giving Robinson some time to position himself and block the ball. Two minutes later Tottenham had a golden chance to go ahead when Berbatov had done well to beat the off side trap and turned round the keeper and should have scored only for McShane making a crucial tackle to deny the goal. Jol then brought on Bent to replace Tainio in the 59th minute but even he could not pierce the stubborn Sunderland defense. Keane then brought on Chopra in the 77th minute in place of Stokes while five minutes later Berbatov was replaced by Defoe. Just when it looked like the game would be heading towards a draw, Sunderland struck with almost the last kick of the match. Chopra latched on a cross from Wallace and with a deft first touch positioned himself nicely before smashing home the ball to give his side the victory. Sunderland next play Birmingham City on Wednesday while Tottenham will be playing at home against Everton on Tuesday. Watch all the Premiership action live here on free-football.tv.
