Sunderland 1-0 Fulham

Fulham slumped to their second straight league defeat as they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday.

Kenwyne Jones was once again the best player for Sunderland and the Trinidad and Tobago international marked his signing of a new contract by scoring the only goal of the match 10 minutes into the second half.

Without an away win so far this season, Fulham started on a cautious note as Sunderland struggled to create many chances. Djibril Cisse should have had put the Black Cats ahead after just six minutes but saw his shot hit the post and roll clear.

Cisse had another great chance to break the deadlock 10 minutes from the half time whistle when Mark Schwarzer parried Jones' shot into the French striker's path but Cisse was unable to take his chance, allowing the Fulham defense to close him down.

Sunderland stepped up the tempo in the second half and were rewarded 10 minutes after the restart as Andy Reid saw his run blocked by the Fulham defense, but the ball fell straight to Cisse who smashed a curling drive towards the target. Schwarzer managed to get his hand to the ball but was unable to prevent Jones from slotting home the rebound.

Fulham's best chance of getting an equalizer fell to Simon Davies who latched on to Clint Dempsey's header but could only manage to chip his chance over the bar from just five yards out leaving the visitors with yet another loss away from home.
