Stoke City 3-2 Aston VillaStoke City registered their first win in the Premier League with a shock 3-2 victory against Aston Villa in their league clash on Saturday.
It was a deserved victory for Stoke who matched their illustrious opponents in all areas of the pitch and were twice pegged back before scoring the winner deep in injury time. Liam Lawrence had put Stoke in the lead from the penalty spot in the 30th minute but an improved display from Villa saw them equalize through John Carew just past the hour mark. Ricardo Fuller restored Stoke's lead in the 80th minute but Martin Laursen looked to have snatched a point for his side by equalizing three minutes later before an injury time goal by Mamady Sidibe saw Stoke collect all three points from the match.
Aston Villa struggled to cope with Stoke's direct style of play as the newly promoted side hooked the ball into the penalty area at every given opportunity. The visitors created a couple of decent chances in the first half but were denied by good saves by keeper Thomas Sorensen.
Stoke took the lead on the half hour mark when Delap was fouled inside the area by Laursen and Lawrence made no mistake from the spot. Villa stepped up a gear in the second half and were back on level terms in the 63rd minute when a great one-two between Carew and Young found the Norwegian striker in front of the goal and shoot across Sorensen and into the net.
With 10 minutes remaining, Fuller restored Stoke's lead with a brilliant goal that saw him outpace Laursen before slotting the ball past Friedel. Villa immediately hit back to equalize three minutes later through Laursen but it was in vain as Sidibe collected all three points for his side thanks to a lucky goal deep in injury time.
