Stoke 1-1 Chelsea
Walters 8 Drogba 33
Chelsea’s faint hopes of retaining their EPL title took a possibly final blow as they failed to overcome a strong Stoke City side at the Britannia Stadium.
And Stoke were only denied victory by a combination of the frame of the goal and another stunning shot-stopping display by Chelsea keeper Petr Cech.
The Blues were stung by a terrific solo effort from Stoke’s John Walters on eight minutes, the striker advancing down the left before cutting inside and unleashing a right-foot shot past Cech from ten yards.
Ashley Cole nearly equalised immediately, his header from Florent Malouda’s right-wing cross being tipped around the post by Stoke netminder Asmir Begovic.
They did level on 33 minutes, Didier Drogba’s excellent diving header by the penalty spot converting Nicolas Anelka’s cross from deep.
Drogba struck the post with a right-foot shot on 50 minutes. Mark Wilson’s 25-yard thunderbolt hammered the underside of Chelsea’s bar. And Robert Huth’s header from the resultant corner was tipped onto the bar by Cech.
Drogba found the woodwork again on 80 minutes with a left-foot drive from 15 yards. And Stoke’s Ricardo Fuller nearly headed a stoppage-time winner from Matthew Etherington’s right-wing centre, the ball flying agonisingly wide.
