Steaua Bucuresti 0-1 ArsenalArsene Wenger took his Premiership side to the Stadionul Ghencea, the home of Romanian side Steaua Bucuresti and earned a hard fought victory, taking his side to the top of group H in the Champions League.
Massimo Pedrazzini the manager of Steaua was under enormous pressure with the threat of being sacked if his side lost this match and that may have led in part to the very cautious game that ensued. With few chances being created it became clear that the first goal could prove to be the winner and both sides concentrated upon not conceding the crucial opening goal.
Those who watch Champions League live will have seen Arsenal have the majority of the possession in the match without creating many clear cut scoring opportunities. Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor both had chances to open the scoring, but as the score line remained unchanged well into the second half, thoughts started to turn towards a draw and a point for each team.
However on 75 Arsenal finally made the break through as the ball found its way to Adebayor in the Steaua penalty box. The striker tried to pass back to Fabregas, but cut the ball too much and it went behind him. Luckily for Arsenal Robert van Persie was following up behind and fired the ball into the net from close range, to continue the perfect start that the Barclays Premier League side have made to the group matches of the Champions League.
Manager Arsene Wenger was very pleased after the match as his young side has continued to play well above the expectations of many prior to the start of the season. Even pre-match rumours of a Russian takeover could not dampen the spirits of the Arsenal fans and players.
