Sporting CP 2-2 AS Roma

A final minute own goal by Anderson Polga gave AS Roma a precious point against Sporting CP in their Champions League clash on Wednesday.

Roma had started the game strongly, taking an early lead through Marco Cassetti but two goals by Liedson on either side of the half time whistle left Sporting in pole position to grab all three points from the game before Polga's own goal left the home fans stunned and Sporting now need to win both their games and hope that Roma slip up in order to qualify for the knockout stages.

Roma stormed to the lead in the 4th minute through a brilliant goal by Cassetti as he cut in from the left flank before releasing a stinging drive past Tiago to bag his first goal of the competition. Stung by the goal, Sporting pressed forward in search of the equalizer and looked to have been rewarded with a goal in the 11th minute when Roma keeper Doni failed to clear Abel's shot and the ball looked to have rolled over the line but the goal was disallowed following a foul by Liedson on Doni.

However it was not long before the hosts pulled level thanks to a mix up between Doni and Philippe Mexes who both collided going after Marat Izmailov's low cross, leaving Liedson with a simple tap in into an empty net. Izmailov and Liedson once again combined in the 64th minute to put Sporting ahead with the Brazilian striker scoring with a diving header past Doni.

With time ticking out, it looked like a Sporting CP victory before David Pizarro attempted a shot on target with Tiago in great position to deny the goal. However the shot took a deflection of Polga and flew into the net, leaving the club with an uphill task of qualifying to the knockout stages of the competition with just two matches left in the group stage.
