Spain 2-0 LatviaSpain took one step closer to qualifying for the Euro 2008 finals with a convincing victory over Latvia in their Euro 2008 qualifying match on Wednesday.
Xavi Hernández and Fernando Torres scored for Spaniards in each half as Spain notched up its 5th victory in six games to stay in touch with Sweden at the top of the table with 19 points. With just three more games to be played, all the top four teams in the group are with a chance of qualifying for the championship.
Spain took an early lead in the 13th minute when he latched on to a great cross from Valencia winger Joaquin and was left with a simple tap in to give his country the lead. However Spin struggled to kill off the match and were unable to create any real chances in spite of enjoying huge amounts of possession.
Latvia very nearly punished them in the 36th minute when Maris Verpakovskis was just inches away from connecting to a cross into an open net. Stung by the booes of the home fans, Spain came out attacking in the second half as Joaquin, Andres Iniesta and Torres all having great chance to double the lead, but were unable to supply the final touch.
Luis Aragonés replaced Joaquin with Miguel Ángel Angulo in the 79th minute and the move paid instant dividends as Torres latched on to a rebound after Angulo's shot was parried away by keeper Andris Vanins. Both Torres and Fabregas had chances to extend the lead in the closing minutes of the match, but Vanins was equal to the challenge and managed to keep Spain at bay.
