Spain 4-1 Russia

Russia became the first beaten team to score a goal at Euro 2008 even as they were at the receiving end of a brilliant Spanish display in Innsbruck. Luis Aragones' side pumped in four goals, with David Villa scoring the first hat trick of this summer's Championships.

Spain started with Marcos Senna in midfield, leaving Fabregas and Alonso on the bench. The striking pair of Villa and Liverpool's Fernando Torres looked dangerous from the word go. They made some clever diagonal runs behind the opposition defenders, leaving the Russians bamboozled at the amount of space they were giving the Spanish. Torres set up the first goal, unselfishly leaving it for Villa to tap into an empty net after stealing the ball from Denis Kolodin. At the other end, Igor Semshov's shot had missed the target after some good work down the right hand side. Meanwhile Torres and Villa began to test Akinfeev with alarming regularity, and the CSKA keeper was kept busy throughout the first half. Villa doubled Spain's lead just before half time, latching on to a beautiful pass from Andres Iniesta and sliding the ball through Akinfeev's legs. That goal was a classic example of good counter attacking football, for Spain had just cleared a Russian corner seconds earlier.

Spain's midfield, consisting of Xavi and Iniesta controlled the game, and the Russians struggled to keep pace with the quality that Spain had to offer. Torres seemed angry when he was replaced by Fabregas in a tactical 54th minute substitution. He refused to shake Luis Aragones' hand after coming off the pitch. Fabregas set up the third by passing the ball into the path of Villa, who then outstmarted Roman Shirokov and sent Akinfeev the wrong way.

Russia pulled one back through Roman Pavyluchenko, playing as the lone striker in the absence of the suspended Andrei Arshavin and injured Pavel Pogrebanyak. However Spain were in the mood for more, and Fabregas capped a wonderful day for them when he headed the rebound from David Villa's fierce shot home to score his first international goal.
