Spain 2-0 Honduras Villa 17, 51
Spain coasted to their first Group H victory thanks to a brace from striker David Villa. But they may rue a host of missed chances, most notably Villa’s penalty miss when his hat-trick beckoned.
The reigning European champions were already in control when Villa gave them the lead, forcing his way between two defenders and cutting inside a third before powering a right-foot shot past Honduran keeper Noel Valladares. Fernando Torres missed two fine chances just after the half-hour mark. And Villa was lucky to stay on the pitch after slapping Emilio Izaguirre in the face. But Villa doubled Spain’s advantage with a deflected 20-yard shot. And he should have made it 3-0 after Izaguirre upended Jesus Navas in the penalty box. But his spot-kick was inches wide of Valladares’s left-hand post. Substitute Cesc Fabregas came closest thereafter when his left-foot shot was cleared off the line by Honduras’ Osman Chavez.
