Spain 0-1 SwitzerlandFernandes 52 European champions Spain surprisingly lost their opening Group H fixture, thanks to an untidy strike by Gelson Fernandes and some wonderfully resolute defending. Switzerland scored seven minutes after half-time when Spanish keeper Iver Casillas lost a 50-50 challenge on the edge of the box with Eren Derdiyok and the ball fell to Fernandes who bundled it home via a prone Gerard Pique. The Spanish dominated first-half possession, but only created one chance, which fell to Pique, whose right-foot shot was well saved by Swiss keeper Diego Benaglio. They upped the tempo after falling behind, introducing star striker Fernando Torres as they chased the game. The closest they came was when Xavi Alonso nearly shattered the crossbar with a stunning 25-yard right-foot shot on 70 minutes. But Switzerland matched this four minutes later Derdiyok cut inside two tackles and rolled his shot against the post with the outside of his right-foot.
