Southampton 1-2 Manchester UnitedChaplow 45 Owen 65 Hernandez 75
Manchester United produced their second second-half comeback in a week to overcome stern League One opposition in Southampton and progress to the FA Cup fifth round. United’s understrength side struggled in the opening 45 period, went behind on the stroke of half-time and had to strengthen their midfield resources after an hour to come through the tie. Saints’ left-back Dan Harding had the ball in the United net early on but was rightly flagged offside, while United’s Michael Owen flashed a right-foot shot narrowly wide and struck the inside of the post with an overhit right-wing cross. Southampton should have led on 44 minutes but Brazilian striker Guilherme do Prado headed over Danny Butterfield’s right-wing cross from eight yards. Moments later, however, Richard Chaplow latched onto a loose ball on the corner of the penalty area and lashed a right-foot shot past debutant United keeper Anders Lindegaard. The 58th-minute introduction of Nani and Ryan Giggs signalled United’s intent. And seven minutes later they equalised when Owen headed home Gabriel Obertan’s deflected pull-back from the by-line. The winner came ten minutes later, Javier Hernandez running onto Giggs’ superb through-ball and slotting it right-footed past Saints keeper Bartosz Bialkowski despite being off-balance.
