Host nation South Africa’s World Cup hopes hang by a thread after they were comprehensively outclassed by Uruguay in Pretoria.

La Celeste were inspired by a man-of-the-match display from striker Diego Forlan, who tops the goalscoring charts courtesy of becoming the first player at the tournament to score twice.

Matters were made worse for Bafana Bafana when goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was sent-off for his part in conceding a penalty on 77 minutes, which put Uruguay 2-0 ahead.

Uruguay went ahead on 24 minutes when Forlan got time and space to set up a 25-yard shot which flew past Khune with the aid of a slight deflection off Aaron Mokoena.

Khune brought down Luis Suarez for Uruguay’s penalty which Forlan drove high to replacement goalkeeper Moneeb Josephs’ right having waited three minutes for the substitution to occur.

Alvaro Periera bundled home the third in stoppage time from Luis Suarez’s right-wing cross.
