Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 CelticCeltic’s dream of progressing further in the Champions League competition may have evaporated in the first ten minutes of their first match although after the match Gordon Strachan put a brave smile on as he faced reporters.
After having finally regained their consistency in the Scottish Premier League the defence were guilty of giving the ball away far too easily for the first goal which came as early as the 6th minute, when Shakhtar Donetsk Brazilian striker Brandao was given the ball on the edge of Celtic’s penalty box and showed no hesitation in shooting past Artur Boruc to give the Ukrainian team an early lead.
Celtic hadn’t even recovered from that early blow when yet another goal came courtesy of the Donetsk strikers. This time Cristiano Lucarelli helped himself to a headed goal after connecting with a fine cross by his midfield team mate Razvan Rat on 8. This second goal had Celtic in all kinds of trouble as they soaked up several more chances from the Ukrainian side and were glad to hear the half time whistle blow. The home fans who came to watch champions league football at the Shakhtyor stadium could hardly believe the ease with which their side won this live football match and may even start to dream about reaching the knockout stages.
For Celtic they must now move forward and have the prospect of playing AC Milan at Celtic Park to look forward to now in what must be a no loose game for them now if they are to have any chance of progressing. As they are finding to their cost there is no room for any bad results in this competition and the point from a draw is the minimum any team should be aiming for if they are not to find themselves in the position which Celtic do now.
