Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Arsenal Eastmond (og) 28 Walcott 10
Eduardo 45 Former Arsenal striker Eduardo inflicted a first Champions League defeat of the season on his old club with the 45th minute winner of an entertaining encounter. Arsenal were without Cesc Fabregas, but Jack Wilshere proved an able replacement. Wilshere’s neat pass sent Theo Walcott clear of Shakhtar’s defence in the 10th minute. Walcott sprinted goalwards before supplying a sublime curling right-foot finish from 20 yards past Shakhtar keeper Andriy Pyatov. Shakhtar Donetsk were unlucky not to equalise in a frenetic spell of pressure around the 18th minute. Jadson headed against the post and Arsenal keeper Lukasz Fabianski made a fine save from Dmytro Chygrynskiy. But Fabianski was helpless on 28 minutes when Chygrynskiy’s header from Jadsen’s left-wing free-kick was diverted into the net by young Gunner Craig Eastmond. And right on half-time, Darijo Srna dispossessed Gael Clichy down Arsenal’s left and drilled a low cross which Eduardo skilfully guided home from the edge of the six-yard box. For all Arsenal’s second-half pressure, they only created two clear chances. Wilshere curled a left-foot shot wide from the edge of the box on 55 minutes. And an unmarked Sebastien Squillachi could only head straight at Pyatov from six yards in the 65th minute.
