Serie A Week 4

Sampdoria 0-0 Genoa

There was a typically electric derby atmosphere for this encounter, that had been some 12 years in the waiting, but the atmosphere alone was not enough to provoke enough entertainment on the pitch in this goalless draw.

It appeared to be a game both sides were determined not to lose, and with such mindset there were few attacking risks taken.

On the positive side for Sampdoria was that they probably edged this tight contest in terms of possession and chances, and were buoyed by the opportunity to hand Antonio Cassano his debut as a substitute, with just under 15 minutes remaining.

Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini will be the happier of the two coaches, seeing a point as a decent result.

Sampdoria striker Claudio Bellucci tested out the Genoa keeper early on with a drive from the edge of the area that Rubinho pushed away. The best chance though fell to Gennaro Delvecchio whose fierce volley from just inside the area flashed inches wide of Rubinho's post.

Cassano's introduction was at the expense of a visibly disappointed Vincenzo Montella, who clearly did not agree with coach Walter Mazzari's decision. The change did not change the game a great deal, and by the time the final whistle blew, both sides seemed to have accepted the inevitable.

Empoli 0-0 Napoli

Empoli's problems in front of goal continue after they turned out another blank in their third consecutive game.

They did, however, come exceptionally close to hitting the back of the net against Napoli in the 88th minute, last season's top scorer Luca Saudati's drive struck the upright and cannoned back out to safety.

Empoli on the whole defended well, and nullified the twin threat of Ezzequiel Lavezzi and Marcelo Zalayeta, the latter coming close to breaking the deadlock with a half volley effort that was beaten away by Daniele Balli from close range.

Marek Hamsik also went close for the visitors when his left footed effort grazed the post.

With neither side doing quite enough to clinch the victory, one point each reflects a fair enough result.

Udinese 2-0 Reggina

Udinese were good vale for their victory over Reggina on Saturday, thanks to a double from in-form Antonio Di Natale.

They were in front as early as the fifth minute, when Gyan Asamoah cleverly helped the ball on for Di Natale, who was up against a defender near the touchline, he then produced an inventive and indeed speculative chipped effort that looped over Campagnolo and into the net. Both keeper and defender may well need to ask themselves if they did enough to stop Di Natale scoring.

Reggina were unlucky not to get back on level terms when Luca Vigiani swung in an inch perfect for Nicola Amoruso ,who rose well and made good connection but the ball cannoned back off the crossbar.

Apart from that chance, Reggina were generally outplayed and Asamoah came close to doubling the lead with a leaping glancing header that just missed the far post.

The second goal did come in the second half, and what a goal it was. Di Natale latched onto a forward ball from Gaetano D'Agostino, deftly controlled with his right and instinctively struck a volley with same foot into the far corner. It was clinical forward play of the highest calibre, and a goal that was good enough to secure any game.

Cagliari 0-1 Palermo

Palermo registered their second consecutive away victory, after a Cristian Zaccardo was the difference at Sant'Elia stadium.

The decisive strike came only 15 minutes into the game, Giulio Migliaccio crossed from the right, and Zaccardo was gifted an amazing amount of space to side foot a volley home. Cagliari coach Marco Giampaolo will be asking serious questions of his defenders to allow Zaccardo such freedom with no defender in sight.

Mark Bresciano had further chances to extend Palermo's lead but failed to make the most of them, and Cagliari's attacking was at best, spasmodic.

A disjointed performance from the home side, but let us not deter from the fact that Palermo came here and created chances and looked like the side most likely to score throughout the game. If finished 1-0, it could have been more.

Catania 0-1 Fiorentina

Adrian Mutu gave Fiorentina their first win since the opening day of the season, and were thankful to a number of saves from keeper Sebastien Frey in maintaining a clean sheet.

Fiorentina took the lead after four minutes, when a corner kick was floated in, and Mutu was inexplicably given too much space in a crowded area, and planted his header firmly into the bottom corner.

Jorge Martinez, Giovanni Tedesco, and Giuseppe Mascara twice, all forced Frey into making saves, but this keeper was in no mood to let anything through.

Catania hopes of finding an equaliser took a blow when captain Davide Baiocco received his marching orders for talking out of line to the referee, and restrict the home side to ten men.

Christian Vieri had two opportunities to put this game to bed and build on his goal in the last game, but was denied by Polito.

Livorno 2-2 Inter Milan

The apprentice met his master at Livorno on Sunday, when Fernando Orsi, who had been assistant to Roberto Mancini at both Lazio and Inter, met up again with his former colleague, as his side Livorno tried denting Inter's title hopes further.

Orsi succeeded aswell, as the bottom club forced Inter to twice come from behind and salvage a point. Inter defender Douglas Maicon made life difficult for his side when he was sent off in the 80th minute, for kicking out at Erjon Bogdani, while he was grounded.

It took only 58 seconds for Livorno to breach Inter Milan disorganised defence, following a simple ball over the top, which carved Inter wide open, for De Vezze to latch onto and scuff his shot past Julio Cesar.

Adriano was in the starting line up for Inter, and nearly scored after 25 minutes, when a scramble ensued, goal line clearances were made, and Adriano hit the post.

Maicon waltzed through Livorno's defence after 35 minutes, with the aid of a fortunate rebound, and laid the ball into the path of Zlatan Ibrahimovic who made no mistake from 12 yards, hammering home down the middle of the goal.

Livorno restored the lead in the second half when they were awarded a penalty following a foul on Nico Pulzetti. Massimo Loviso converted the spot kick sending Cesar the wrong way.

The referee levelled things ten minutes later, when Ibrahimovic was brought down, and he himself then got up to slot home the penalty, despite Marco Amelia guessing the right way.

Roma 2-2 Juventus

Roma dropped their first points of the campaign when they could only manage a draw at home to Turin giants Juventus.

Potentially the biggest clash of the season so far did not disappoint, and one could not argue with the outcome of the game.

Zdenek Grygera made his Juventus debut, and Claudio Ranieri made positive changes including Vincenzo Iaquinta in three pronged strike attack alongside Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet.

It was Trezeguet that opened the scoring and in the process bringing up his 100th Serie A goal. Iaquinta crossed accurately from the right, and Trezeguet typically stole half a yard ahead of Philippe Mexes and planted his header firmly past Doni at the near post.

Francesco Totti then struck twice in the space of six minutes, first he cleverly turned the inexperienced Domenic Criscito on the edge of the area, and curled his effort round Gigi Buffon with great assurance.

Buffon then made a save at the feet of Alberto Aquilani, but was helpless to stop the rebounded shot from Totti nestling in the net.

Early in the second half, Roma defender Cicinho brought down Pavel Nedved for a penalty, and once Del Piero planted the ball on the spot, Roma's hearts were in their mouths. The unthinkable then occurred, as Del Piero skied his effort over the bar, and the score remained 2-1.

The equaliser came three minutes from time, Iaquinta helped on a long throw, and the ball looped over Doni with Juan unable to clear off the line. Honours even at Stadio Olimpico.

Torino 1-1 Siena

It was an action packed game for Massimo Maccarone, as he saw Torino keeper Metteo Sereni deny him twice from the penalty spot, before scoring the equaliser to give Siena a point.

Both these teams remain without a win this season, and it was Torino that looked the more likely to gain one, when they took the lead in the 24th minute. A corner kick caused all kinds of confusion in the Siena area, and the home side did exceptionally well to keep the ball in play, then it fell to Paolo Hernan Dellafiore whose shot was saved by Eleftherpolous, but it was deemed already over the line.

It was Maccarone that earned both the penalties, his first was palmed to safety, and his second fortunately rebounded back into the path of the former Middlesbrough man who made no mistake at the second attempt.

Torino should have snatched it in the closing stages, but substitute Dominique Malonga wasted the opportunity.

AC Milan 1-1 Parma

Three draws on the run now for AC Milan, this coming in another game they would have been expecting to triumph in.

They were fortunate in the style of the game's opening goal. Kaka crossed the ball in for Pippo Inzaghi to attempt a difficult instinctive half-volley that forced Nicola Pavarini into a smart save. The ball went loose and Paolo Castellini slid in to complete the clearance, instead he succeeded only in deflecting the ball onto the shinpads of Clarence Seedorf and into the open goal.

Credit to Parma who could have sulked and felt sorry for themselves after an unfortunate incident, but instead they fought back into the game and got their reward in the 73rd minute. Reginaldo smartly deceived Nesta out on the left wing, and found enough room to cross for Andrea Pisanu who flicked the ball on from the front post and into the far corner. It was a fantastic finish from Pisanu and it left Milan stunned.

Both sides went looking for the winning goal for victory, but it did not arrive and the Milan faithful went home disappointed with a draw. The Rossoneri remain four points behind leaders Roma.

Atalanta 2-1 Lazio

Atalanta have found their way into third place after a 2-1 win over stuttering Lazio, after Riccardo Zampagna scored another vital winner for the home side.

The side from the capital are yet to get a win under their belts, this was, however, their first taste of defeat.

The opener came just before half time, Ferreira Pinto crossed deeply from the right, and Antonio Langella headed purposely down in to the bottom of the keepers near post.

Langella could have made it two after the break when his spectacular effort rattled the framework.

Lazio introduced Massimo Mutarelli, and his impact was immediate. He had only been on the park two minutes when a Goran Pandev cross was missed by keeper Ferdinando Coppola, as he was anticipating a touch from a Lazio attacker, and it left Mutarelli the simple task of tapping in at the back post.

Not to be denied victory, Atalanta struck back in stoppage time, when Lazio allowed a long goal kick to get behind them and Zampagna reached to direct his volley over the advancing Muslera, to give Atalanta their second win of the season.
