Scottish Premier League Week 3Dundee 0-0 Hibernian
Although the game ended as a goal less draw, Craig Levein will no doubt be a relieved man to at least take a point from this game from the team who has shot to second place in the Scottish Premier League and who also took most of the points on offer from them last season. Luck may have played its part in what turned into a quite entertaining game despite the efforts of the rain to dampen spirits. Both keepers were kept busy and despite some blunders coped well with the chances created. The best chance of the first half fell to Steven Fletcher and Brian Kerr who both failed to convert past a sprawling Grzegorz Szamotulski. The double save from the United keeper remained the highlight of the first half although Noel Hunt and Willo Flood had chances to take the lead for Dundee. The second half proved much more entertaining with both teams creating chance after chance but failing to make them count. Merouane Zemmama who was given a start after scoring two as a substitute last week had a quiet game and was substituted himself early in the second half after failing to score when a blunder from United keeper Szamotulski gave him the ball on the edge of the box unfortunately he shot straight back at the relived keeper. Benjelloun as well was unlucky not to open the scoring however the home keeper was in good form to block a good shot. At the other end, Hibs keeper Ma-Kalamby showed his good form by stopping a Noel Hunt at the death to keep the score sheet blank. Both keepers will take the credit for the result and Dundee will probably be best pleased by the result as it now means that Hibernian will be feeling pressure from the chasing pack. Hearts 1-1 Gretna
The result of the day fell to Gretna as the newcomers earned their first point in the Scottish Premier League which also saw them move off the bottom of the league table for the first time. Unfortunately they failed to keep a clean sheet which may be starting to concern manager Davie Irons. Having seen the team score 3 goals in 3 matches he will know only too well that the leaking goals must be stopped if they are to have any chance of staying in the Scottish Premier League. The first half was played in typical fashion by two teams who were worried about loosing the match. Few chances emerged but the majority of the chances fell to the home team, however Gretna’s had numbers behind the ball to thwart the Hearts attempts to open the deadlock. The second half saw Hearts make two changes to try to force a way through but Gretna continued to defend in numbers having apparently learned lessons from their first 2 games were they were hit for 7 goals. Driver who had been left on the bench following indifferent displays in the previous matches opened the scoring on 73 after good build up and a fine pass from Stewart. All that was left was for Driver to guide the ball into the net, which must have been a huge relief for him to finally see his name on the score sheet. In their previous matches conceding a goal had led to a collapse from Gretna but this time they were spurred on to take the game to Hearts and were rewarded with an equaliser on 79 when Craig Barr rose to head home a Yantorno free-kick. The goal also saw the borderers have the better chances to win the game but they will be extremely happy to take their first point and move off the bottom of the table. Motherwell 1-2 Kilmarnock
Motherwell suffered their first defeat under new manager Mark McGhee and saw Kilmarnock leap frog them into third place in the table in the process. The game had seemed to be heading for a draw until a late strike by Rhian Dodds gave the visitors all three points. Again the rain made for a poor first half as the teams worked hard, but produced very little in clear cut scoring opportunities. Motherwell opened the scoring through David Clarkson when he shot low past Kilmarnock keeper Alan Combe on 23 minutes after a fine cross from Phil O’Donnell. Although both teams had chances to score, it was the home team who looked the more comfortable going into the break with a slender lead intact. The second half began with Motherwell taking the game to Kilmarnock and looking comfortable with their lead; however on 60, Kilmarnock found themselves level as David Lilley headed home from a Gary Locke corner. With time ticking away both teams pressed for the winner and had chances to win the game in the final minutes, but with Motherwell celebrating a disallowed goal, it was Kilmarnock who took advantage and countered through Gary Wales, who broke free and passed to Rhian Dodd’s on the penalty box for him to score the winner in injury time. Although Kilmarnock will no doubt be the happier of the two teams, both managers will be fairly happy with the overall performance from two of the stronger teams in the Scottish Premier League. Rangers 7-2 Falkirk
With 74 minutes gone in this match Falkirk were desperately trying to score one more goal to take a draw from Ibrox. Over the next 20 minutes or so they were well and truly demolished, including two late goals in injury time. Falkirk started the game knowing that Rangers have been close to hitting top form and must have wondered what hit them when Rangers scored within the first 2 minutes. Daniel Cousin it was who finally headed home a Ferguson corner after both Weir and McCullock both missed their chance to put the ball in the net. Falkirk did not let the early goal unsettle them and started to play with confidence trying to score themselves. Unfortunately they found themselves 2 down on 34 when an on rushing Whittaker making his debut ran onto a Ferguson chest down and watched his shot deflect into the Falkirk net. Falkirk clawed one back before halftime when Riera saw his 25 yd shot fly past Allan McGregor and hit the top corner to send Falkirk into the break confident of drawing level. The second half took some time to see the first good chance and it fell to Rangers as Cousin again took the opportunity which other Rangers failed to slot the ball into the net on 54 to take a 3-1 lead. Falkirk continued to press and were rewarded with another goal on 72 when substitute Barrett brought McGregor off his line to confidently score and set up the chance to take a point from the fixture. Any hopes were soon dashed though as Kris Boyd scored his first goal of the campaign as he scored on 75. With the game won Rangers made changes up front which saw substitute Darcheville score on 88 and 90 and his fellow substitute Broadfoot score his own goal in injury time. For the second weekend Falkirk must be wondering where it all went wrong. For long periods they held their own against the Glasgow clubs and yet have finished the two matches with 11 goals scored against them. From their point of view they will take confidence in the fact that they have shown they can match the best teams and must now move on to the next fixture. St Mirren 2-1 Inverness CT
St Mirren took the points in a very entertaining match where the weather was trying desperately to spoil the afternoon. Both teams had good chances and possession but it was left to St Mirren to take the lead through new signing Franco Miranda marked his debut with a goal on 19. Both teams pushed foreward but neither could add to the score sheet before the break. As the second half got underway Inverness pushed hard for an equaliser, but found themselves punished for not taking their chances when Mark Corcoran converted a tap in to put the home side 2-0 up on 55minutes. Inverness finally managed to breakthrough on 58 with Cowie sliding home from a Niculae cross to give the visitors hope of earning a point at least. Despite chances for both teams the score remained the same at full time and saw the home side take the advantage over their relegation rivals to secure 3 valuable points. Aberdeen 1-3 Celtic
This match was choosen as the live football match of the Scottish Premier League and turned into a pulsating encounter. After an hours play the match had disaster written all over it from the Celtic point of view, but credit to the Champions they waited their time and kept creating chances which eventually led to them recording what looked like a n easy victory. Both teams played their parts in an entertaining match which saw many changes following Celtics midweek Champions League fixture and Aberdeen recalling Considine and Brewster and it was Craig Brewster who swept in the first goal after 24 minutes following a cross by Nicholson. Celtic didn’t panic though and continued to create chance after chance. Non more so than Nakamura who constantly harassed the Aberdeen defence. It was left to Massimo Donati to equalise on 61 from inside the box after good build up play. Credit to both teams as they both pressed forward, but it was left to Kenny Miller to come on as a substitute and score 2 late goals on 85 and 90 to give Celtic the 3 crucial points and keep them in touch with Rangers.
