Reading 1-0 Everton

Everton lost out to a hard working Reading in their Premiership match at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday. A Stephen Hunt goal a minute before half time was enough for Reading to claim its first win of the new season.

Everton have started the season brightly, winning the first two matches and were looking to extend their winning streak against Reading on Saturday. While Everton looked the better team in the second half, Reading's determination throughout the match deserved three points even though Andy Johnson lost a glorious opportunity to rescue a point for Everton.

The first chance of the match fell to Reading in the 6th minute when Seol Ki-Hyeon drove in a low cross from the right wing and Kevin Doyle's attempt was blocked over by Joleon Lescott. Everton's first chance of the match fell to Andy Johnson following good work by Mikel Arteta. However the England striker saw his attempt blocked by Andre Bikey.

Reading had a penalty appeal turned down in the 19th minute when Lescott looked to have handled the ball inside the box but referee Steve Bennett warded a corner to the home side. Reading were creating a number of chances with Doyle and Hunt both missing the target.

Just when it looked like both the teams would be heading into the break scoreless, Hunt struck. Ulises de la Cruz's long throw from the right wing bounced over Doyle and went straight to Hunt. The striker steadied himself with a touch and slotted home the ball past Tim Howard in the 44th minute.

Everton came out attacking in the second half but were unable to create any clear chances. Substitute Steven Pienaar had a shot on target from the right wing but his shot was parried easily by Marcus Hahnemann. Everton had a great chance of equalizing with five minutes left when James McFadden hit the cross bar from his attempt.

The ball deflected straight to Johnson but the striker failed to convert from six yards out, with his shot smashing against the inside of the post. Reading held on to their narrow lead and managed to come away with all three points for the first time this season.

Reading next face an out-of-form Bolton Wanderers on Saturday while Everton will be looking to bounce back from the defeat when they play Blackburn Rovers. Watch Premiership football live on free-football.tv.
