Portugal 2-0 TurkeyPortugal produced an impressive display to see off Turkey 2-0 in their Euro 2008 group opener. With the legendary Eusebio and winger Luis Figo watching from the stands, Luis Felipe Scolari's side did well enough to please pundits and fans alike in Geneva.
Joao Moutinho got the nod ahead of Miguel Veloso, and Scolari started with Paulo Ferreira at left back. Hamit Altintop started at right back for the Turkish, with Fatih Terim giving Kazim Kazim a place in midfield. Pepe headed home in the fifteenth minute for Portugal, only to see his celebrations cut short by the assistant referee's flag. Sanli Tuncay was guilty of diving at least twice in the first half to try and attract Herbert Fandel's attention. Most of Portugal's attacks came down the left flank, with Simao and Deco very much in the thick of things. All eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo, and his most dangerous effort came from a set piece five minutes before half time. Ronaldo has taken some wonderful free kicks for United this season, and Volkan Demirel just about managed to get his fingertips to the ball. A brilliant piece of defending from Gokhan denied Joao Moutinho a minute later after Deco had done some great work on the right hand side.
Turkey replaced Mevlut with Sabri at the beginning of the second half, and were forced into another substitution when Gokhan was injured ten minutes later. After an hour, Portugal finally broke through, and it was Pepe who scored. The centre back moved from defence to attack, exchanged passes with skipper Nuno Gomes before beating Volkan Demirel. Four minutes later, Gomes himself hit the crossbar after connecting with a Ronaldo cross. He passed the captain's armband to the latter when he was replaced by Nani in the 68th minute. Turkey had a wonderful chance to equalise eight minutes from time, but substitute Emre Asik wasted a free header after Nihat's corner had been swung into the box from the right. It was probably their best chance of the game, and they were made to rue that miss towards the end, when Cristiano Ronaldo's run down the left flank saw him find Moutinho, who set up Raul Meireles for Portugal's second goal.
It was a tough game for Portugal, but by breaking down Turkey, they have shown that they mean business. Turkey gave a good account of themselves, but could not do enough to stop Scolari's men.
