Portugal 0-2 SwitzerlandHakan Yakin scored a brace in Basel as Switzerland secured their first ever win at any European Championship when they beat Portugal 2-0. The game was also Kobi Kuhn's last in charge of the Swiss, and the players gave their coach a fitting farewell with a win over the group leaders. Kuhn will be succeeded by former Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld.
As expected, Luis Felipe Scolari rested several first team regulars, and brought in eight new faces, including Ricardo Quaresma, Nani, Miguel Veloso, Fernando Meira and Bruno Alves. The Swiss gave Pascal Zuberbuhler a chance in goal, and youngster Eren Derdiyok partnered Yakin upfront. Johan Vonlanthen started in place of Tranquillo Barnetta.
The first half was goalless, but Ricardo denied the Swiss twice, with both Derdiyok and Yakin coming mighty close to scoring. Nani had a glorious chance to score in a one on one position with the keeper in the second half, but the Manchester United winger failed to keep his composure and hit the outside of the upright. There was no such mistake from the experienced Yakin twenty minutes from time, as he sent the through Ricardo's legs after being fed by Derdiyok's superb pass. Four minutes later, Fernando Meira brought down substitute Tranquillo Barnetta in the box, and Yakin found the top left corner to score his 3rd goal of Euro 2008.
The win, along with Turkey's late comeback in Geneva, meant that the Swiss finish third in their group, and do not end up with the wooden spoon. And after the game, the hard working Swiss gave their coach a lap of honour, and unfurled a banner that read ' Merci Kobi ' (Thank you Kobi) to show their gratitude.
Switzerland could have progressed past the group stage, but a combination of bad luck and injuries ensured that they will have to wait four years more to stamp their impression on the Championships, when Poland and Ukraine co-host it.
