Portsmouth 1-2 Wigan AthleticPortsmouth suffered their second straight defeat under Tony Adams as they were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Wigan Athletic in their Premier League clash on Saturday.
Amr Zaki continued his excellent form in the Premiership by scoring his eighth goal of the seaosn to give Wigan the lead on the stroke of half time. Portsmouth fought back well in the second half to equalize through Niko Kranjcar and looked to have done enough to claim a point but Emile Heskey scored the winner in injury time to help his side to break their four match losing streak.
Determined to snap out of their poor form that has seen them lose their last four matches, Wigan started the game brightly and could have taken the lead early in the game when Lee Cattermole crossed the ball for Zaki whose header flew inches high of the cross bar.
Wigan were dominating the chances as Antonio Valencia saw his shot parried away by David James who was quick to react in denying Zaki on the rebound. Portsmouth's best chance of the half fell to Peter Crouch who saw his header loop over Chris Kirkland before smashing against the cross bar.
The visitors finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time when another unnecessary tackle by Papa Bouba Diop saw him foul Titus Bramble inside the penalty area and Zaki made no mistake from the spot.
Kranjcar replaced Armand Traore at the start of the second half and the Croatian international almost made an instant impact when his curling free kick was cleared off the line by Palacios.
Defoe and Crouch had good chances to pull Pompey back on level terms but were unable to hit the back of the net with the Wigan defense desperately trying to maintain their slender lead. The hosts grabbed a deserved equalizer with just eight minutes remaining when Kranjcar latched on to a cross from Belhadj before slotting the ball past Kirkland.
Just when it looked as if both the teams will be sharing the points, Heskey scored a dramatic winner in the final seconds of the injury time as he converted Cattermole's pass from close range to give his side all three points from the clash.
