Portsmouth 0-1 Fulham

Fulham completed an amazing escape from relegation as a hard fought 1-0 victory over Portsmouth kept them out of the drop zone and leaving Birmingham City and Reading to rue missed chances this season.

With Reading and Birmingham City winning their respective matches, Fulham looked set for Championship football next season as they struggled to overcome Portsmouth. However Danny Murphy hit the back of the net 14 minutes from time to keep his side in the Premiership for the next season.

Fulham started the game knowing that a win against Portsmouth will assure their safety but the visitors were off to a jittery start. However they were helped by a listless Portsmouth side who came into the match on the back of three straight defeats in the league.

Fulham's only chance in the first half fell to Simon Davies but the midfielder failed to beat Jamie Ashdown in the Pompey goal. The hosts themselves had a couple of good chances through Kanu and Defoe but both the players were unable to hit the back of the net.

The second half started in the same fashion with Fulham solid at the back but unable to create any chances. With time running out, Fulham finally managed to get the break through in the 76th minute when Jimmy Bullard curled in a delightful free kick from the right flank for Murphy to head home from close range.

Portsmouth tried to press forward in search of an equalizer but Fulham hung on to claim a vital victory that completed an amazing comeback for Roy Hodgson's side.
