Newcastle 0-0 Aston VillaIt was a frustrating maiden home game for new Magpies manager Sam Allardyce as his wards were held 0-0 by Aston Villa at St James' Park. Despite having Michael Owen back to lead their attack, Newcastle were unable to break the defensive knot formed by Aston Villa. There were plenty of chances for either side, but while Newcastle were unable to pierce the Villa defense, Aston Villa were unable to convert the chances that came their way. Villa boss Martin O'Neill emphasized on defense in this game and his tem b\never came out of their defensive mindset throughout the 90 minutes. Newcastle defender David Rozehnal had the first of the chances that Newcastle managed to create, but Villa goalkeeper Scott Carson was alert enough to deny the Magpies. His counterpart Steve Harper needed to be equally alert to stop defender Martin Laursen's header. Harper was also called upon to tip away Nigel Reo-Coker's shot, which was headed goal ward. John Carew posed constant danger to the Newcastle defense, but Harper was always on hand to stop any reverses. Gabriel Agbonlahor also posed some tough questions for the Newcastle defense, but neither side was able to put the ball in the net. James Milner was pretty active for Newcastle and his cross was a brilliant one, but Viduka was unable to make contact late in the half. Alan Smith was also unable to cash in on Milner's clever pass and the game remained deadlocked despite Agbonlahor causing a few alarming moments toward the end. Michael Owen who came in with 23 minutes left was also unable to break the impasse and both sides had to be content with one point each. Aston Villa next play Fulham at Villa Park, while Newcastle visit Middlesbrough at Riverside on Sunday.
