Newcastle United 1-4 Portsmouth

Portsmouth produced a brilliant attacking display to thrash Newcastle United 4-1 in their Premiership meeting at St James Park on Saturday.

The visitors scored three goals in three minutes leaving Newcastle with an uphill task to come back into the match. Noe Pamarot opened the scoring in the 8th minute of the match before Benjani Mwaruwari doubled the lead in the next minute. John Utaka scored the third for Portsmouth two minutes later as Newcastle pulled one back through an own goal by Sol Campbell in the 16th minute. However Niko Kranjcar restored the three goal lead in the 71st minute leaving Newcastle manager fuming on the sidelines.

Portsmouth took the lead with a brilliant goal by Pamarot in the 8th minute of the match when the defender latched on to a poor clearance by the Newcastle defense to smash home a volley from 25 yards out leaving the home fans stunned. Newcastle's defensive woes was splendidly exploited by Benjani a minute later when he took full advantage of Cacapa hesitation to curl home a volley to double the lead.

Things got worse for the Brazilian defender in the 11th minute when Utaka snatched the ball from the 31-year old, rounded past a hapless Steve Harper before passing the ball into an empty net. The hosts got one back five minutes later when David James pulled off two great saves before seeing the ball hit Campbell's chest and go over the line.

Steven Taylor had a great chance to score a second for the hosts but was denied by another brilliant save by James. Though Newcastle avoided anymore defensive howlers, their inability to create any chances at the other side meant that Portsmouth were always in control of the game.

Niko Kranjcar grabbed a fourth for Pompey in the 71st minute when Harper was hopelessly wrong footed by the Croatian's freekick as it curled into the net, leaving Newcastle with their first home defeat of the season.
