Newcastle United 2-0 Sunderland

Newcastle United continued their amazing return to form with a hard fought victory over arch rivals Sunderland in their Premiership match on Sunday.

Michael Owen put the Magpies in an early lead in the 4th minute before doubling the lead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time. The win keeps Keegan's hopes of finishing in the top half alive with just three games remaining in the season.

Newcastle were off to a perfect start when they took the lead in the 4th minute as Owen raced forward to meet Geremi's cross and slot home past Craig Gordon. Sunderland struggled to create any real chances throughout the half and Newcastle should have had put the result beyond doubt early in the game as they failed to convert the chances that came their way.

With half time fast approaching, the hosts were rewarded a lucky penalty when Owen's chip struck Higginbotham's arm though there was no intent. Owen stepped up to take the penalty and kept his cool to convert from the spot.

Sunderland tried to take the game to Newcastle in the second half Danny Collins and Andy Reid going close to getting the equalizer. The visitors' best chance fell to Kenwyne Jones whose header was saved brilliantly by Harper.

With Sunderland failing to create any real chances, Newcastle hung on to claim their fourth win in five matches as remain on course for a top half finish.
